Graffitti Gratitude

Have you ever spotted a scribble that made you smile?

U R Free

Maybe it’s some kind of subconscious protest against the jarring commercial messages I’ve been thinking about, but I’ve noticed a lot of these lately. Particularly after a recent conversation with a friend about graffitti vs. vandalism.

While I don’t condone the defacement of public or private property, I do love finding these urban easter eggs. Compared to ubiquitous commercial advertising that hits us gently like an obnoxious stream of shoulder taps — “Psst…Spend money. Psst…You suck. Spend money. Psst…Your whole life sucks. Spend money…” — they’re very refreshing.

I don’t even care if these are meant ironically. They still made me smile. :)
